Working from home is great… Until your neighbour starts banging away at the wall and then the kids start being naughty. If you can manage your own time and choose your own hours it’s a dream, however it can be incredibly hard if you don’t plan your morning ahead of time. Here are some working from home tips.
The early bird catches the worm
You can get more done before everyone else is awake. You will have fewer distractions and have a more peaceful environment. It’s nice to enjoy the sunrise once in a while with a Latte in one hand and a computer in the other. Waking up earlier allows an earlier finish, freeing up time later-on with the family.
Separate work zones from relaxing zones
When you work from home, it’s easy to curl up in bed with a laptop and pretend that you’re “working”. To improve your efficiency, build a separate home office/desk just for work. Minimise distractions.
A plan a day keeps the Doctor away
A plan from the day before makes it easier to get started when you wake up. The last thing I do before finishing the day is to write a to-do-list for the next morning. I write things down and then forget, until I look back at the notes.
Diving into the to-do list, before the rest of your family have woken up can be the key to making real progress. It is very wise to communicate with your partner or whoever is living in the same house as you. Try to reduce surprises and setup everything so it will be as fluent as possible. Planning your day the night before lowers stress.
Use a calendar to create events and reminders that inform you to start on new tasks; include lunch and breaks.
Dedicate mornings to the difficult tasks
Prioritise the difficult tasks first. You can get a tonne done in the early morning hours.
Take off those pyjamas
Dress the part, remind yourself you are in work-mode. That means comfortable work clothes — not pyjamas.
Cancel noise for focus
Working from home may expose you to sounds that become irritating or eventually unbearable; traffic and street noise or the ticking of a clock, etc. Are your kids playing close to your workspace?
Noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds are great at removing those sorts of sounds almost entirely. Combined with music, they work even better.
Remember: You have to adapt yourself to the environment, other people have to live in the house as well.
You can hold virtual meetings, jump on a phone call, or send a friend a text. Reach out and support one another — and laugh! Keep your sanity and connect with people!
Build opportunities for socialising into your day. There are many tools of communication, email is just one of them; Call colleagues rather than using email.
Modern technology has made it insanely easy to stay connected. Use tools like Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp and Trello.
Working from home Tips/Reminders
Time is important. You can always make more money, once time is spent, you don’t get it back.
If you are not most productive in the morning, it’s important to recognise when you are most focused and energetic and to plan your schedule around that.
