At college, I got a job at a call centre selling windows. It wasn’t the most glamorous of jobs but it helped with the bills. If I wasn’t smiling when answering the phone, the boss would get me to stand up and smile. Surely enough, when standing up smiling, I would end up with leads.

Whether the smiling helped me sell windows, or the wanting to sit back down did, it worked.

Whether people can see you smiling or not, Smiling when talking, makes you sound happier and creates more confident tones within your voice. Try it now!

When I am happy and smiling, it affects my productivity in a good way. Positive emotions appear to give that extra boost, to get more done. I strongly believe that smiling makes me a more creative and efficient worker.

Is Smiling underrated?

A smile can be a powerful thing. It’s a known fact that when meeting someone for the first time, that person can subconsciously formulate an opinion about you within just a few seconds. For this reason, I believe that smiling is very underrated. It’s vital that your first impression of somebody new involves a smile.

Being greeted with a sincere smile is one of the satisfying human interactions, and it can make you heartthrob with positiveness. But, it’s not just smiling with your mouth that matters. If you can master smiling with your eyes, I believe you can conquer the world.

When smiling, are people more likely to help?

I believe they are. It’s easier to ask for favours from people and colleagues if you ask politely and smile. Remember to flash those shiny whites, and pass along the good vibes. You are less likely to get rejected when smiling and laughing.. Unless you are laughing at them.

Smiling helps reduce stress, diffuses tension and reduces burnout over time. Smiling can really help support people working together.

Is smiling attractive at work?

More people prefer working with happy and positive people than negative and grumpy people. I would rather approach somebody smiling than not smiling. Interaction with others is easier and more enjoyable when smiles and laughs are shared. Smiling is contagious.

Randomly smile at someone and they will more than likely smile back. Smiling make other people feel great, which is why I believe that everybody should smile. Who wouldn’t like to be a more appealing and attractive person to be around.

One of the issues with smiling is that it can be confused by some people, as flirting. After all, It’s difficult to flirt without smiling. Smiling is an indicator that someone likes you.

How can I smile and laugh more often

If you don’t think you smile enough, add these techniques into your day;

Smile and laugh more regularly

It’s unlikely that people will think your smile is fake unless you’re too smiley (Like an HR manager I once worked with). Making a habit of smiling more often, will make you feel better and more comfortable with it. Eventually, that fake smile will become more real to you, and you probably won’t realise your smiling.

Watch funny films, TV, and theatre shows

This is an excellent way to create those positive vibes. If you want to smile more, try to limit your negative program intake, such as the news. Also sharing what makes you laugh on TV usually brings people together. Especially if people can relate to what makes you chuckle.

Spend time with friends and family that make you feel happy

If you’re surrounding yourself with happy, fun, and optimistic people you will more than likely start to mimic their behavioural patterns.

What are you grateful for?

Sometimes it can feel like we are drowning in negativity and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. When negativity pulls you down, remind yourself of all the good and positive things that are in your life. It’s very easy to forget what we have until it’s gone. Answer yourself these two questions;

  • What are you grateful for?
  • What are you looking forward to today?

Find things to smile and laugh about

Focus, really look at the things that are funny and uplifting. Focus on the present moment and you will be more aware, and ready to engage in a spontaneous giggle. To help with mindfulness and living in the present moment, I listen to mindfulness audiobooks while I work.

This article is just an insight into why I believe smiling is important at work. Give smiling ago when you are in the office or in a zoom meeting, and notice the results for yourself!
